Queen’s Road, Wivenhoe 2014
The project was a pair of Victorian terraced cottages in the same ownership altered to make one house. Both cottages had kitchenettes and bathrooms and tiny low ceilinged Bedrooms in added rear extensions with only very limited views of the small gardens. The architectural challenge was to keep to the same footprint (for planning reasons) and to design an extension for contemporary living, without spoiling the original cottages or the street scene in a Conservation Area.
The contrast between new and old works well and the photographs show the electrifying effect of opening up the living spaces to even quite modest views of trees and adding sunlight where there had been virtually none.
